Even though MELROSEandFAIRFAX had the original exclusive weeks before TMZ's 'exclusive', TMZ is reporting that Mr. Brainwash admitted that he is getting paid for the Red Hot Chili Peppers advertisements he has been putting up, and that it is a 'job'.
Previously, many people had conjectured that the pieces MBW was putting up might be the RHCP's album cover. And maybe that would be more understandable, if MBW's are were featured. But the RHCP's album cover has been done by Damien Hirst, not MBW. So these posters are really just ads.
This is sure to upset many folks in the street art community who feel that advertisements should be kept off the streets, and in fact, to many people street art is a reaction to the advertisements. Since MBW sloppily capped over many artists when putting up these posters, and many artists and fans are already upset. And now, to have one of the top recognized so-called 'street artists' confirm that he is spamming the streets with paid advertisements, it seems like the ultimate sell out.
