Please Do Not Destroy My Art - What Happens to the Art at 'Art Show 2011'?
A lot of people have been wondering what is going to happen to the community art at Mr. Brainwash's 'Art Show 2011'? This particular piece seems to ask the question straight on saying 'Please Do Not Destroy'.
The initial press release states that 'Works will be on view for the duration of the exhibition and will be destroyed on the final day. None will be available for sale'.
When we returned to the gallery space on Wednesday, Mr. Brainwash told M&F that he wishes that he would have chosen a different word other than 'destroy' when writing the press release. He did not want to say that he planned to 'destroy' the contributed works, rather, he simply meant to say that the works will not be sold or used in any way. And therefore, when the show is over, like any art installation, once the show is finished it will be removed.
No one is standing to profit from the submitted works and Brainwash does not have epic plans to 'destroy' the community art.
It might be easier to think of the contributed art at 'Art Show 2011' as an installation that will last as long as the show. It captures a moment in time, and like street art, the show too is temporary.
