A Snitch Is A Snitch Is A Snitch

Blah. A snitch revealed~

The other day M&F made a post about Mar being a hater. We don't know what this dude's deal is or what he is trying to prove, but he keeps doing stuff that violates everything that street art is about, and we thought the the community had to be made aware. Mar has done a bunch of questionable things, but the biggest violation is that he has taken it upon himself to publicly out other street artists.

This is scary because behavior like this puts the entire street art community at risk. This is not about personal beef or whether it is deserved--outing another artist is never deserved. It doesn't matter who you are or what injustice you might feel was done--if a snitch chooses to out someone in the street art or graffiti community, it reveals more about them as a snitch than the name of the artist that the snitch is revealing. The act of snitching shows that the snitch's loyalty is not to the streets or the culture he has been part of. This presents a real danger to the community as a snitch has been exposed, and the snitch could snitch on anyone at anytime.

And, from what we understand, the artist that Mar has snitched on has done nothing to provoke these attacks. Mar has publicly posted emails between himself and the artist, selectively edited to try and make the artist look like an asshole, but even then, all the leaked emails show is someone who is the artist trying to be nice to Mar, and show restraint even when Mar is an asshole. The artist says that although they were never friends with Mar, they were always friendly, and this comes as a blindside and as a complete surprise. Apparently, and we don't have the full details but this is the story as we understand it, Mar snitched on the artist in response to coverage from this blog. As we said above, in the unwritten rules of the street, there is never a good reason to out someone. But if there was, this has got to be the lamest. Mar, if you have something to say, say it like a man to us, and not like a little bitch by issuing veiled threats online and snitching on legitimate street artists in the community. You have revealed yourself as a Judas and a rat, and nothing more.

This is an ugly post. We hate doing it. To be honest, we never thought we'd be in the position where we would have to. Its scary how this all popped out of nowhere. Until this drama went down, we also thought we were 'friendly' with Mar. Clearly, that is not the case and we won't be working with Mar in the future on any projects. But having an active snitch in the street art community poses a threat to everyone involved. Mar has shown that he is willing to snitch on people for the tiniest of reasons, and if that's the case, he could do it again to anyone at anytime.

So, as a public warning to the graffiti and street art community in Los Angeles, with gallery shows, with emails, with photos, and even when introducing yourself, be very careful be very careful when dealing with Mar. Those who feel that they have an identity they want to keep secret will want to be extremely wary around Mar, and even those who are in the community but not secret should appreciate how unpleasant this behavior is.

We are done writing about this. We want to celebrate street art not get bogged down in snitch drama. LA's street art will continue on, keep growing, and keep blossoming and thriving, like a garden. And even though we didn't like to do this, it had to be done. Like weeding the garden. And in order for a garden to grow to its fullest, you've got to get rid of the pests. Like rats. No one likes a rat in the garden, well, because it ruins all the good stuff. Mar is a snitch and a rat, and the community is best without those elements threatening its growth.

Be careful of the rats. And stay up~

  1. I am a quiet follower, check the blog every day. Im not part of the street art community, the 'in' crowd, or anything... so my opinion probably isn't welcome. But I live in the neighbors you cover, and come to M&F as a 'guide' to what I'm seeing.

I respect and value this resource tremendously. That said, this blog is better than the drama.

My suggestion: Extricate yourself from this BS. You are an ambassador for ART. I would avoid being a mediator or handler for the ARTISTS. It does nothing for you as a guide to wade into the mercurial dynamics of artists. These posts read like the drama is more important than the art.

You know these people and care for the community. I understand your interest in protecting them. But they can do that for themselves. They are, after all, street artists, and are more than familiar with risk. I would look at the blog mantra when setting the tone for your agenda. Advocating art will always help the artists more than propagating personal agendas.

I love the blog because you folks set a great standard. Keep up the good work, forget the BS.

  5. i got to agree with the first guy above, let the artist handle their own beef, you guys need to stay above it all, we are all big boys and girls....rather thank post a blog of someone you no longer respect, just cut them off from the association to this blog. As you are aware, artist who have access to this blog, get access to thousands of views, they'd be stupid to destroy that relationship.
