Annie Preece has been putting up a lot of art work on the streets over the past 10 days or so, and while her effort is energetic, Annie has not been winning over fans within the street art community.
The street culture has a way of doing things, and while Annie's enthusiasm is commendable, it seems to be much more about promoting herself, rather than a relationship with the streets. Annie signs murals with her real name, and even posted wheat pastes, like the one pictured above, with an actual portrait of herself.
Moves like this seem so foreign to traditional graffiti and street artists. Ask any graffiti writer and signing one's name on the streets is the first rule not to do. A graffiti writer recently told M&F this week that Annie's signing her name makes a mockery of graffiti. This person was not a fan.
On the other hand, some people in the general public seem to enjoy the bright colors in her pieces.
Stay up?
OH wait if she wants to sign her real name thats fine!!! expect the police department at her doorstep really soon. Hipsters these days.
ReplyDeleteher murals are sick! fuck it if she wants to sign her own name. as for the wheatpastes - that shit is gonna catch up to her
ReplyDeletewhen did mom start doing street art?
ReplyDeleteTeacher does the same thing. *ahem*
ReplyDeleteGreg Siff does the same thing, oh wait he doesn't do anything illegal so shouldn't worry about cops.
Deleteshe's constantly complaining on how she doesn't have a boyfriend....she's annoying.
ReplyDeleteKisok does that too, but he's shirtless
ReplyDeletekiosk has better boobs
Deletesome of the artists mentioned do put up a picture or their name but no one else is stupid enough to post a picture and their real name
ReplyDeleteThat can be arranged...
DeleteAll the artists mentioned actually PAINT. Critics are getting more retarded everyday. Thank you for keeping us posted on this.
ReplyDeletewho cares about her name? this shit sucks!
ReplyDeleteThis does nothing for the electrical box, actually i dont notice to many street artists on here creating paste ups that beautify the streets. Most of them just get paper paint it or print it and then paste it on something and there piece may be good art but if its placed sloppy or doesn't beautify the spot whats the point? It just downgrades the spot and then its ripped. I think the artists need to reevaluate how there paste ups are placed and on what they are placed on. Make spots better looking cmon 'artists'??
ReplyDeleteThat was such a beautiful electrical box too. All grey with spit and gum on it! And now look at it! RUINED FOREVER
DeleteShe should of just did one of her paintings on it. That would of 'beautified' the place. Pasting obviously isn't her thing.
DeleteAnnie's got a story that's pretty incredible. Google her. She doesn't do anything the "traditional" way.
ReplyDeleteWhat's her story? She was a garbage dumpster for drugs? Big whoop! She bangs chicks? Who cares!
DeleteShe's not a graffiti artist. She's an artist. Dont' like it? Don't look. Note: by each posting or comment you leave here, you are increasing site traffic and in-turn giving her more press & exposure (the opposite of what it sounds like your interested in doing) - Sooooo yeah.

Like people don't find out the identities of graffiti artists who use other names. :) I don't see the point in saying anything negative about someone creating and doing their thing. Why not just put that energy into making your own work?
ReplyDeleteOMG a "street" artist thinking outside of the box? We can't have that kind of behavior! An underground graffiti community cannot tolerate change or innovation! If you don't follow the rules you will be called out! THIS MUST STOP! Next thing you know we will have gang members sending secret codes with spray paint!
ReplyDeleteArt is art-There are no rules, thats what makes it beautiful. Many of the greatest artists throughout history were persecuted for their images because they didnt fit a singular point of view or belief system. Are we doing the same to Annie?
LOVE
The problem is not that she does everything different. It's that she does everything the same as all the bandwagon-riding toys!
DeleteStep 1. Put some xerox celebrity posters on Melrose
Step 2. Paint a legal wall on Melrose
Step 3. Catch a couple illegal tags on Melrose
Step 4. Have an art show on Melrose
Step 5. Be really proud and tell everyone you design "graffiti t-shirts".
zzzzz zzzzzzz zzzzzzz it's a slap in the face to street art, just keep your shit inside.
^^^^ ding ding ding That is correct! a huge slap in the face
Deletepay to have your own art show...lame
ReplyDeleteprints of herself...NOT ART
"tags" of her name with a heart... kindergardeners do that on home walls everywhere
such a lame excuse for a wanna be street artist. no worries though come october no one will remember her
Hey Anonymous, Anonymous and Anonymous (you street artists?)
ReplyDeleteAnnie hasn't called herself a "street or graffiti artist" since she left San Francisco in the late 1990s, she didn't use her own name when tagging then but you may have seen some of her stuff in a couple of books. She's moved to painting canvases now. The posters, tags and murals are for publicity, they aren't the "art". Don't get your shorts in a knot, she's not stepping on your toes.
You seem to know so much about her!
DeleteIs this Annie speaking in third person?
If Annie (you) is just using posters, tags and murals for publicity– like you said– than good job on exploiting street art for your gallery work!
Why else do you think everyone is skeptical?!?!
Definition of a Fame Banger
ReplyDelete"She's not a graffiti artist. She's an artist."
ReplyDeleteHmmm.. This could be one of the most illogical statements ever posted.
Do any of you anonymous critic have fresh tags on the 101? She does. Do you know how to paint? She does. Do you have any current spots? She does.
Armchair historians and critics can post anonymous comments, while Annie Preece claims the public domain. Actions speak louder than words, and real words are still more powerful than comments left anonymously on a blog.
The rules of the streets are flexible, and the labels that people place on others are not always what they would place on themselves. Artist=Artist.
"Do any of you anonymous critic have fresh tags on the 101? She does."
DeleteHAHAHHAA YOU SOUND SO FUCKING RIDICULOUS! HHAHAHA
Why did the author of this blog only put up the wheat paste posters as examples of Annie's art? 10-days? Really? Is that all you've got? http://www.anniepreece.com
ReplyDeleteYOannieYOUsukkkk!!!
ReplyDeletegoBACKtoOBSCURITY + take kris w/ you
I have never seen so many people get their dicks in a knot over guerrilla advertizements which is obviously what this is.
ReplyDeleteAll you anonymous haters are not suggesting that this obvious 'street ad campaign' has the slightest bearings on your exclusive world of Writing are you?
The mere possibility that anyone would confuse this womans art with your Writing is sheer fantasy. Mostly because we can actually read her scribbles.
Having trouble telling the difference between art with a message and your territorial pissings? Perhaps its the fumes...
