We thought it was cool to have Twist and crew roll through town, but the Dissizit crew didn't appreciate their 2-day old wall getting capped in the process. So they came and took it back.
Twist & Co. were going wild, and getting loose. Sometimes too loose, as in the capping of the Skullphone piece up top.
And the Dissizit crew thought they'd do something about it. They came back to the wall, and Prime, Defer, Ha, and Slick claim back the ground level space on the mural wall.
wow the streets talk back. Great evolution
ReplyDeletegreat post.
F.H
is this a legal wall?
ReplyDeleteThose tags take out those pitiful throwies.... Straight garbage.
ReplyDeleteHa. Crazy.
ReplyDeleteClothing Advertisement is still a clothing advert even if it's done in a"graffiti" style manner. Mickey mouse hands are just that, cartoon hands. Welcome to the OC. I like the throw up look better.
ReplyDeletePeople need to decide what they want to be. A true non-conformist, non-corporate artist or a conformist advertisement slut sell out. Doesn't matter how legendary you are.
ReplyDeleteTwist and Espo come into town and get everybody nervous. Looks like the Dissizit guys have nothing better to do but to 'claim' walls. And I agree with the other guys comment. The Amaze tags take out those sorry-ass throw ups. I dont think Twist and Co did anything disrespectful here. All the wall really was before was an ad for Dissizit Clothing, not real street shit. So it would be like going over any other billboard. Just dont see the big deal when the Dissizit wall was just a bunch of wheat paste stuff with a couple of simple pieces. Quit your crying, Im sure Twist will leave town and never even notice that you 'took back' your precious wall. Hes busy making real art, and real money... WORLDWIDE!
ReplyDeleteit's hand painted. NOT WHEAT PASTE!
ReplyDeleteSuffice it to say Art in the Streets doesnt translate to 'Smart on the Streets' -this is one of the moments that polarize and even agitate an already a contentious issue about the culture of graffiti art and street art.
ReplyDeleteI will chime in and qualify my position as someone who has been in the game since 1976 and earned his stripes actually painting trains and has the respect from his peers on both coasts East and West if not our global community.
Slick is one of my closest friends and an artist I admire and respect, he is an unquestionable icon in the West Coast history of Graffiti and Street Wear culture who has built his name and brand by earning it with blood sweat and tears. Todd James I know from New York City and knew him as a talented kid who really respected and valued the ethos of the writing culture, Espo I dont know well but he has publicly expressed his tenements for Graffiti ethics which are aligned with the historical tradition of being a writer. The rest of the lesser talents of the crew who dissed this wall I could care less about though I am surprised that Twist was among them.
Dissclaimer* I am not privy to who or why this cross out was sanctioned since it is a retail space. But what I am privy to will form my opinion since I just had dinner with Slick and also attended the MoCA opening in which I am also participating.
This wall in many ways reeks with the current sense of entitlement some 'Street and Gallery' artists have with their position in the culture. The blatant oversight wether sanctioned or not is against common sense that you dont go over a legendary crew on their own territory especially in a high profile public space especially during a politically loaded institutional show at MoCA, and more importantly you dont do toy tags and throw ups so nonchalantly over said crew and leave their crew logo revealed so all can see the disregard of your actions. Truth be told and despite the talents the perpetrators they do not have the same measure of respect and regard that Slick has earned for LA culture if not the writing culture as a whole.
As I see it this is symptomatic of something these younger artists have yet to grasp about the state of our union on the streets and in the art market. There is too much at stake for this too happen so publicly, our community is close knit and interconnected by our successes and failures so the shock for me is that it would happen to a family member who I believe is well liked by some of the heads who painted over him. The failure of these guys is that they dont understand that not all writers have the same forgiving soul as Slick, he is an artist first then a writer some of his crew are straight OG Gangtsa for whom writing was the after thought, you do the math.
I believe there will be reconciliation but this opens up a pandora box and like I stated its a much bigger issue then what you see on the surface so dont over simplify it or over think it just know there is a code on the street that should not be taken for granted.
This will require community discourse in order to avoid inflaming it more than necessary (we dont need another East Coast West Coast beef) and I hope that the mistake by all parties involved will come to offer a public apology and support for the restoration of the mural.
That said we are all here in Los Angeles to celebrate US and the unlikely success of what was a marginalized art culture FROM THE GHETTO and now the leading form of expression for youth worldwide, so set an example and cut the toy shit out, be upright and come correct or you will be checked.

All I see is a dope DUEL RIS throwie!!!
ReplyDeletefuck Slick and his team of dickriding dorks. They go over other people all day and karma is a bitch!
ReplyDeleteeverybody just needs to calm down, it ain't that serious.
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS A LEGAL WALL! So all this hype about gettin' "dissed" is all a bunch bullshit. Slick got permission to paint there just like Twist. The owner of the building even told Slick that he was gonna let Twist paint the wall afterward. This wasn't and illigal wall! Both Slick and Twist painted this wall in broad daylight with permission from the owner. SO PLEASE, CUT THE FAKE BEEF OUT! Nobody has to respect Slick or Twist if the owner of the building gives you permission to paint it (no matter how good or wack your pieces turn out). If slick is gonna get mad at someone he needs to take that shit up with the owner of the building and stop trying to portray this bizzar, art school/gangster image.
ReplyDeleteAgain, the owner of the building didn't respect Slick's art if he gave Twist the greenlight to paint over it.
