The street culture has a way of doing things, and while Annie's enthusiasm is commendable, it seems to be much more about promoting herself, rather than a relationship with the streets. Annie signs murals with her real name, and even posted wheat pastes, like the one pictured above, with an actual portrait of herself.
Moves like this seem so foreign to traditional graffiti and street artists. Ask any graffiti writer and signing one's name on the streets is the first rule not to do. A graffiti writer recently told M&F this week that Annie's signing her name makes a mockery of graffiti. This person was not a fan.
On the other hand, some people in the general public seem to enjoy the bright colors in her pieces.

ReplyDeleteThis does nothing for the electrical box, actually i dont notice to many street artists on here creating paste ups that beautify the streets. Most of them just get paper paint it or print it and then paste it on something and there piece may be good art but if its placed sloppy or doesn't beautify the spot whats the point? It just downgrades the spot and then its ripped. I think the artists need to reevaluate how there paste ups are placed and on what they are placed on. Make spots better looking cmon 'artists'??

Like people don't find out the identities of graffiti artists who use other names. :) I don't see the point in saying anything negative about someone creating and doing their thing. Why not just put that energy into making your own work?

ReplyDeleteAnnie hasn't called herself a "street or graffiti artist" since she left San Francisco in the late 1990s, she didn't use her own name when tagging then but you may have seen some of her stuff in a couple of books. She's moved to painting canvases now. The posters, tags and murals are for publicity, they aren't the "art". Don't get your shorts in a knot, she's not stepping on your toes.

The rules of the streets are flexible, and the labels that people place on others are not always what they would place on themselves. Artist=Artist.
