Don't Speak for Me, Septerhed

We had the opportunity to hang out with multiple street artists last weekend. We had a blast, but there was a lot of grumblings about Septerhed. It seems Septerhed has been stepping on a lot of toes in the street art community lately, and one of the most blatant violations seems to be the putting the voice box that says 'Septerhed' on other artists pieces of work. . .

It seems one of the things that really irks a lot of street artists is the thought bubble that Septerhed puts on pieces of street art saying Septerhed's name, like the one pictured above (over unknown artist).

The topic came up when MELROSEandFAIRFAX asked the simple question of what the street artists like to see on the blog, and then the talk turned to quality (people are saying there is more junk on the streets than ever before), and then in three separate times in groups of multiple aritists, we heard people say that they wouldn't put up art next to Septerhed because they didn't want to be photographed with his work.

One local heavyweight said heatedly, "Its like a buff, but worse. I don't want people thinking I like Septerheads stuff!!"

While we understand that the re-appropriation of space is inherent in street art, apparently there seems to be a big line in the community between when it is done to an advertisement or blank public space, and when one artist's art is re-appropriated by another artist without invitation.

We are not riding Septerhed's balls--the dude has really put in work getting up. But we try to reflect the conversations that are being had in the community, and after hearing the same things so many times in a row, it seemed to be a big thing on people's minds and we felt it deserved to be raised. And maybe the fact that he is up everywhere is a big part why people are feeling perturbed.

  5. I agree, lots of people are just complaining to complain. I met Septer at his show and he's not a bad guy and his stuff isn't all bad... but he needs to stop with those fucking thought bubbles... end of story!

  7. i like the thought bubbles? people are jaded cuz sept gets up more than them. Septerhed is one of the most loyal/hard working street artists in LA. dudes shit is everywhere. its funny cuz im dramatic etcc but damn ppl keep getting their feelings hurt about the lamest shit. focus on the art and not the drama. quit judging every single move made on melrose! its making street artists look like a bunch of winey ass pussies. now i know why grafitti artists talk so much shit on us street artists.. we're sensitive little bitches

  11. I can see why people would be upset about the talk bubbles. I like the way All the Girls Love Earl uses them (over ads).

But yeah, mostly I think people need to not take themselves too seriously. Part of the whole street art thing is the collab aspect, right? If by collab, I mean not having any control of what happens to it once it's out there. And I do.

  12. Jesus, what a bunch of suckers. Everyone can bitch and moan all they want, but at the end of the day Septer is up, and a lot of these kids are not. "Heavy weight"... hah! It's just the name of the game. As soon as anyone else starts to separate themselves from the pack, people start bitching. I feel like the only mistake Septerhed made, was to apologize. Put up some more "comment" bubbles dude, piss'em off even more. If they're crying, use it at your litmus test to know that what you're doing, is working. Just remember, that at the end of the day, no publicity is bad publicity. Werd.

  13. I wish I has Septerhed thought bubble to carry around with me all day long. I'd hold it up instead of speaking whenever anyone tried to talk to me.

  14. There needs to be a clarification which was not stated in this article. Over 75% of the talk bubbles were permitted on the artists work by the artists themselves. This is not a dis. There are 3 that were not. Like I said above...I apologize for the 3 that were not...but all the people grumbling about me and my work need to know the whole story. I don't like being made out to be some disrespectful asshole who fucks up other peoples work or spotjacks or sidebusts or really just gets up as everyone else seems to do. If you know me...you know this is not my deal. If you have a problem with me...email me and tell me so we can sort it out. Septerhed1@gmail.com

  15. Here's a thought bubble for all you anonymous fucks/haters... Thank you Mr. Septerhed for making existing street art pieces look better with your thought bubbles. Please don't apologize for your work, you've got these dumb asses talking.

    Kisses

  17. its the rules of street art from the graffiti days...you get written over and you get posted over...life goes on allow the spot to continue to have life and dont be sensitive to the fact that others spot jack you if your shit has been up there for more than a year. Your design had its moment stop acting like a child who suddenly wants to play with a toy they havent played with in years just because someone else wants it
