Well is THIS a Banksy?!

Another possible Banksy sighting, but this one is missing the yellow caution sign. Click the jump below for more.

This one appears to be the same stencil, but without the yellow back ground.

What do people think? Is this a Banksy? or a copycat?

Spotted by a_onsurez on the way downtown.

  4. Like I said about the last possible fake. In Banksy's piece the kite string is dangling from the man's hand. In this one and the Washington Caution piece the string is not dangling from the man's hand. Why would that subtle feature not be in both if it was the same stencil Banksy used for his original Caution piece? Someone might be trying to take credit for Banksy's work...Where is the location for this piece?

  5. That looks like the old Macy St (Cesar Chavez) bridge crossing the 10.

  6. Hmm... this stencil looks pretty much exactly like that one on Washington and Flower... and they're both slightly different than the one on Banksy's website (the kite string extends below the guy's hand in that one). Either this is a pretty well-done copycat stencil (that the person used twice), or Banksy has 2 versions of the same stencil. Hmm...

  7. eh who cares who did. Even if it is a stolen banksy design there is no telling if banksy himself didnt steal it off something in the first place. Cant we just go back to appreciating art?

I like it better in this instance without the yellow square, it fits in the block well.

    cool spot too

  13. this is obviously NOT the same stencil as the official banksy.

not only are there fewer ties on the string, but you can see subtle spacing differences between the figures (among other subtle differences).

    most likely a fake.

  14. It just hit me. ANYONE can get access to the stencil of the immigrant crossing. I googled and found purchase sights for the sign just like any other street sign that you want to add to your home. The three people in the stencil is no different from the actual sign. The kite addition is the only difference. So if the kite doesnt match up to the original photo on Banksy's website than it might not be. Something tells me he would claim all his pieces. Give me 5 hours and i could have the same stencil ready for painting. Just food for thought...

  15. No one can find the one that's pictured on Banksy's website. Maybe it has been buffed because he placed it in a neighborhood that is mostly hispanic and they're highly offended by the freeway crossing sign, and don't even see the kite? That being said...anyone checked North Hollywood?

As for MBW being a hack. Um, didn't you see the movie?

  16. I checked North Hollywood, Burbank, Culver City and East LA. Started yesterday at Sepulveda at the 118 and took it all the way up to Washington Blvd in Culver City, Went up and down Washington and Venice Blvd. Took Washington to Compton and checked the surrounding areas of the Crayon forclosure, followed three different streets up to MOCA.... Nothing. I was thinking LA Area around Vermont and Beverly. Highly Hispanic Neighborhood, high telephone poles, just a thought. Might check it out today. I've seen 30 different Jack In The Box billboards, but also, a lot of advertisers are switching to the digital billboard. I saw the Jack ad on about five of those. The hunt continues...

  17. This is fake simply by where it's located. To the East of the LA River (aka: Boyle Heights). These art fools never come this way.

  19. @ B. Land- I believe the former "caution" on Washington/Flower to be legit. The string is probably not part of the stencil, but rather hand drawn after the stencil was sprayed, hence the differences. (i.e., the balloon strings on the Palestine Wall) A thin line would be too annoying to cutout.

@ Keith- I think the wooden power/phone poles are a good guide to finding the street of the "Banksy website caution." Also, looking at the shadows and probable time this was taken (next day, late morning), I feel as we're looking towards the Northeast. That being said, I do not see skyscrapers or the hills. Im thinking Echo or Silverlake. Happy huntin'...
