Artist Profile - Teacher
Teacher invited M&F over to his studio to see his work space and some pieces he has been working on. The visit left a real impression on us, and the work at the gallery was nothing short of astounding.
Teacher was an accomplished studio artist before he ever moved outside, and he has earned a big name for himself on the streets. Teacher is one of the most active street artists, with a new piece every week or so. His images are all based on hand painted, or hand drawn pieces by Teacher, and are then wheat pasted, or stenciled, or 'stuck' around the city. Nearly every piece has a personal relationship for Teacher, whether it be his children, his friends, or his cat. And he is consistently pushing the ideas of what street art is with everything from hand made signs to 3d box takeovers.
Everyone who follows the blog knows that Teacher is not scared to go big, and the spots Teacher gets up at are nothing short of insane. He has hit billboards, boxes, buildings and poles, City Hall and the State Capitol. A lot of artists hit 2, 3, and 4 story rooftops, but Teacher is the only one in LA hitting 30 story skyscrapers. In fact, he might be the most fearless artist on the streets today and has even recorded video getting up with a cop in the background. Aesthetically speaking, apart from some billboards that were purposefully done in a certain manner to show how little respect is given to Teacher's in America, each piece compliments the surroundings and the placement always seems to be well framed.
But perhaps the most poignant thing about Teacher is the message behind his art. He is not just 'getting up', Teacher is trying to use his art to make the world a better place. He is trying to spread awareness about the perpetual decrease in public school funding. Teacher has a vested interest in this as the proud father of two. And he believes that by making education a priority, the world will be better for the next generation.
His street persona is impressive, no doubt. And in the time that we have known Teacher, he has grown into a good friend, and we can't say enough good things about him as a person. He truly is a stand up guy, the kind of person that Boy Scouts should model themselves after. He is always ready to stand up for what is right, and he has gone above and beyond to help out M&F. We can't thank him enough for all the nice things he has done. And it is no small statement or stretch of the truth to say that the world would be better if there were more people like Teacher.
The pics from his studio are all pieces that Teacher has painted himself. And the studio pieces really showcase his talent as an artist.
Thank you for sharing your art, Teacher. And thank you for making the world a better place. Stay up~

ReplyDeletei'm so thankful to Melrose and Fairfax for posting my work. this blog provides great exposure with an opportunity to get anonymous feedback which is helping me to get better. i'm also incredibly thankful for the encouraging comments which are very motivating and inspiring. i've never had any gallery do this much for me and they take %50 of sales. after considering this, the wifey and i have decided to give %20 of all street art sales to Melrose and Fairfax and %30 to educational programs.
ReplyDeletethanks again to everyone.
stay up!
