Well, it is not an easy task for civilians to go onto a school campus these days, but Teacher waded through literally months of red tape before he got approval to do some live painting at Fairfax High School.
Every day this past week, Teacher set up in the main courtyard of Fairfax High and painted a beautiful piece, all the while engaging and talking with the curious students. Teacher says that the students were inspired, and so was he from all the stories that he heard.
Very cool to see how Teacher is practicing what he preaches, and how he is taking his valuable message right to the ears that need to hear it.

ReplyDeleteThe biggest impact a teacher ever had on me, was a bumper sticker he had up on his wall near his desk, it said "question authority". Now that im a teacher myself, i realize why that became so important as a student to read that in his history class. All students want is someone that is real and inspiring. Teacher is doing just that to these students. If only more teachers can actually inspire in the classroom instead of trying to suck the creative life out of them.

Demonstration method is very effective, modelling behaviors/techniques is also a highly respected form of instruction, particularly in art. I find it extremely amusing that the ignorant public that was educated by the school system finds themselves capable of assessing teaching methods with no real knowledge on the subject. If teachers suck so bad, maybe the best thing that could happen would be for more people to volunteer, like Teacher. If you want to criticize a teacher then learn about education first, then go sub for a day.

Teacher was great with the kids, really encouraging and interested in what they were going for in painting. Plenty of kids stopped to check out what he was doing, some hung out and watched closely. And while he was a positive voice urging the students to explore art, he did not suggest or push street art on these impressionable young minds who surely would not know about such things from their studies at Fairfax High on Melrose.

HUGE thanks to IDLE and Fuxus for being teachers and John W Ennis for stopping by and supporting. so much artistic talent at Fairfax High School and they were soooo cool - stopping back by to see the progress of the painting and bringing others - specially Daniel who works at the Blue Rooster on Vermont, my new favorite art supply store. during the week i explained to over 80 students how i traced the image down with a projector then did a value study in brown acrylic and finished with color in oil paints. i already had plans to go back and do more volunteering, but after such a great experience, i'm trying to get back in there as soon as i can. i highly recommend it. two of the three people in the office responsible for getting me in Fairfax High have been let go along with many others. please volunteer if you can, LAUSD can really use the help.
