C'mon Really?

A lot of this 'new breed' of street artists, the ones who popped up post Exit Through the Gift Shop, many seem to have a different idea of the role graffiti plays on the streets. They seem to think that all graffiti does is add some flavor to the background, and they just go ahead and cap graffiti willy nilly.

But graffiti laid the groundwork for street art, and in the world of graffiti when you cap someone, you are delivering a personal insult, starting a battle, and running the risk of getting capped by the other writer "fo'evah'.

Artists are free to place stuff where they want, but sloppy placement like this is just ridiculous. In two separate pieces, Casio Dusty manages to cap 7 graffiti tags including some big names like CBS, Decep One, Pike, Serf, TCF, and more. We don't know for sure how this is going to play out, but we can guess what is going to happen, and Casio's pieces probably won't last for long.

And we dig these digital watch pieces from Casio. It would be cool to see them ride. And much of the time he has really good placement. But stuff like this capping graffiti tags with one big paster is happening way too much and it needs to be called out. The graffiti and street art scenes generally have a lot of respect for each other in Los Angeles, and it would suck to see LA become like New York where there is constant beef between the two.

Get up, stay up, and respect the others getting up.

  1. i hear you, but in defense for casio in this case he kinda had to cap someone to get up on this spot. it's part of the game and adds a nice mix of mediums, but ya it can be hard to get up with pasters when all the good spots are heavily tagged already. these pasters dont "deliberately" cap the tags, but it can seem that way when observing the art. do your best to respect others work but sometimes things get covered. i think there's a big difference between deliberate caps and accidental caps. crossing someone out is war, covering someone is a reality and it's gonna happen. im sure casio meant no harm when deciding to paste here. that spot is begging for pasters. stay up!

  2. Slaps often get covered by other slaps. Its just how the world works. Same as pastes get covered my newer pastes. thats how the world works. i dont get offended if someone goes over my paste. Im just glad people have seen them and hey its times for a new piece for people to appreciate.

  3. Oh shit. My bad. True, I was inspired after "Exit Through the Gift Shop" and that definitely played a role in why I started, but I can assure you that I did not get into this medium for the attention. This has been a great way to get my message out and I truly mean no disrespect. I was honestly just cruising around one night and thought that would be a fun spot to go up on and didn't really think one way or the other. No beef intended. Hell, I'll even take them down as to not offend. Lesson learned.

  5. Its a lot like surfing- if you think you can jump in without proper guidance about etiquette, safety, pecking order, etc. you will be in for a very rude awakening on many levels. I see this phenomenon quite a bit these days- almost as if the new generation refuses to do the work-they just want to arrive so badly, that nothing or no one else matters.
And it most likely, as Casio said, is probably not an act of aggression but one of amateur ignorance. Casio should be thanking MelroseandFairfax for providing the means for him to apologize publically because it sure looks like a direct hit on grafitti by some poster geek. The damage may already be done unfortunately since some of those writers may not read this blog. oh well---Just ask Buff Monster about his experience when he did the same thing to one of LAs most respected and hardest
    graf crews--Lol.
