MOCA Is An LA Exclusive: 'Art In The Streets' Won't Be Going To New York

The Brooklyn Museum has 'changed its mind' and decided to cancel the NY version of 'Art In The Streets'.

The LA Weekly just broke the news that the Brooklyn Museum is "withdrawing" from hosting 'Art In the Streets', which is currently in Los Angeles at the MOCA Museum.

The show was originally planned to be in Los Angeles until August, and then travel to New York and re-open NY focus.

The museum is citing problems with funding while skeptics are pointing out that this shouldn't be a hard show to find financial sponsors for. Those cynical about the Brooklyn Museum's supposed financial reasons for passing on the show accuse the museum of running scared from the possibility of negative press.

This is just another example of the growing pains associated with the high brow world of museums and art galleries trying to harness the energy of the low brow world of graffiti and street art. As with MOCA's buffing of the Blu mural, it seems like the crowds are ready to support the art, but those in charge are still worried about how it might be perceived.

Its too bad that 'Art In The Streets' won't be travelling to New York. It would have been cool to see the differences, and surely it would have been super popular, like it was here in LA. Guess the Brooklyn Museum's backing out really enforces the idea of what a groundbreaking show this was, and how impressive it was to pull it off. It is unfortunate that New York can't enjoy the art, but it just means that LA has a lock on the show. And, once again, LA is setting itself apart as the current home of the graffiti and street art movement.

So, Art In The Streets is an LA exclusive~ Natives of LA, or those visiting, hurry over and enjoy MOCA's 'Art In The Streets', and if you go on Monday its free, thanks to Banksy.
