No Brits at Brit Week

The festivities for Britweek went down last weekend in Santa Monica.  But as far as the street art was concerned, there were no Brits at Briweek (and technically no street art, either).

Two famous British graffiti artists Eine and Inkie were supposed to show up, but neither did.  Instead, it was only LA based Mear One and Man One painting canvases on the street.

M&F's on the scene correspondent/contributor Bill said that the Brit Week street art scene was disappointing.  He described it like this: "So we have Man One and Mear One doing canvases. It was typical "Downtown Santa Monica, Inc."  No signage as to who was who or what was what. No background info. No stickers No handouts. Man One had left and Mear One was on a break.  The woman who was hanging around the exhibit didn't know crap about what was going on - or care."

It seems surprising that since Downtown Santa Monica was a primary sponsor yet the street art was painted on canvases and not on walls.  Bill joked that Santa Monica should have stuck with Cinco de Mayo, instead.

Nick Walker - Street Art Influencing Children

Perhaps the best part about Nick Walker's stencil art being at such an unusual location is that the kids who play at the Santa Monica Boys & Girls Club have the chance to get influenced by the art on the walls.

Like this giant butterfly from Walker, wrapped with ribbons towards the bottom.

Nick Walker - Vandal?

What makes a street artist?

Nick Walker is one of the biggest name stencil artist's in the world.

Walker visited Los Angeles in 2012 and put up some of his signature images, including his signature 'Vandal' image of a guy in a suit . . . at the Boys & Girls Club in Santa Monica.

Walker left the word 'Vandal' off of this piece, but it is a humorous juxtaposition to see Walker's commissioned Vandal riding on a legal wall next to some playground equipment and some human size Alvin & the Chipmunks characters.

As for the art, Walker cuts an impressive stencil and this is an interesting piece with a fist in place of the man's face.  The work is good, but this piece begs the question--What makes a street artist?  Walker is one of the biggest names in the world, yet he has no street cred.  Shouldn't a street artist have street cred?  Or does that not matter?

Santa Monica Stencil

Another Santa Monica street art submission from M&F contributor Bill B.

This piece features a green one layer stencil of a man in a hat and suit carrying a briefcase.

The piece has been tagged over by 'Glass', but not sure if the original stencil artist did it or if the tag was added after the fact.

Destroy Rebuild Repeat

Fresh street art from Dillon in Santa Monica.

This pic was submitted by Bill B., a big supporter of LA's street art scene--and indeed the world.  Bob points out that it is a big surprising that these pieces are still riding "as Santa Monica is very aggressive in buffing out any kind of graffiti or street art and has a city crew in public works that does nothing but remove 'graffiti' even if it's on private property."

Dig it.  Way to capture the art before its gone.  Now we rebuild and repeat~
