Top 10 Street Art Stories of 2011

Check out the full list with pics on Huffington Post.

#10 Revok Gets Arrested
After the resounding success of MOCA's 'Art In The Streets', a lot of people were discussing whether graffiti and street art is art or a crime? The local news was reporting an upsurge in graffiti around the museum during the exhibition, but the LAPD had no arrests to show for it. Then, one of the artists in the MOCA show, Revok, was arrested and made an example of by the LAPD. Revok was arrested trying to board a plan to an art show and was booked on an exorbitant $320,000 bail. Revok did some time an eventually got released from jail. Even though he did his time, some city officials have since told the artist that he will never be allowed to paint in LA again, legal walls or not.

#9 Famous People Doing Graffiti & Street Art
It has been fascinating to watch famous people's fascination with street art. Many celebrities seem to be drawn to the anonymity of these stealth art forms. Some have even started dabbling like Jim Carrey and Shia Leouf. Others, like Lindsey Lohan, have acted out being graffiti artists. And some have been unwilling participants, like when Scarlet Johansson's nude leaked photos were pasted on the streets.

#8 LA Artists Achieve Beyond LA - Alec Monopoly Goes Big
LA street artists have been achieving huge success in LA and beyond. And the full extent of that stardom is best exemplified by Alec Monopoly. Alec has launched from the rooftops of LA to global adventure artist. In 2011, Alec has travelled all over the world, hosted sold out art shows in the hottest venues, sold pieces to celebrities, dated movie stars, and hung out with Damien Hirst. Alec Monopoly has truly shown that the sky is the limit for street artists in LA.

#7 Teacher's Rise and Arrest
In 2011, Teacher quickly became one of LA's favorite street artists because he went BIG, with style, and his art carries a profound message. Teacher's art focused on funding education, teaching children, and generally making the world a better place. Unfortunately for street art lovers and children everywhere, Teacher got busted in late 2011. Still not sure of what the outcome will be, but our thoughts and wishes are with Teacher!

#6 Despite Ban, Murals Thrive in Los Angeles
Despite being technically illegal in Los Angeles, art murals have thrived. The city is bumbling towards installing some new guidelines for the murals, but meanwhile the art goes on.

#5 Street Art Causes a Bomb Scare
The LAPD responded to a street art installation by Free Humanity as a bomb threat. Free's piece was entitled 'Forbidden Fruit' and it featured an apple with a grenade cap attached to where the stem would be. The LAPD bomb squad shut down the nearby light rail station for 3 hours and 'disassemble' the apple with a bomb squad robot.

#4 LA is the Biggest Street Art City in the World
As street art has carved out its own niche, on the streets yet separate from graffiti, Los Angeles has made a name for itself as the busiest spot in the world for street art. The hits on M&F have followed this pattern, and based on hits and web traffic, earlier this year Melrose and Fairfax achieved ranking as the top street art blog in the USA and #2 in the world. This is especially impressive considering the blog only focuses on one city, while many top sites are a best of from the top artists in the world.

#3 MOCA's 'Art In The Streets'
2011 saw the most ambitious graffiti and street art museum exhibition ever with MOCA's 'Art In The Streets'. The show had record breaking attendance and was the biggest exhibition ever at the museum. There was a lot of discussion about what was left in, what was left out, and Jeffrey Deitch's previous business and personal relationships with some of the artists, however, the show will be most remembered for giving a new level of credence and legitimacy to art on the streets.

Indeed, we at M&F believe that street art is the biggest art movement of this generation, and MOCA's 'Art In The Streets' signifies the beginning of high art institutions to recognize this.

#2 Banksy's Oscar Run
Spring 2011 Los Angeles was abuzz with Banksy fever. Banksy instigated a campaign to drum up hype for his Oscar nominated film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, and over a two week period, Banksy installed a series of new pieces in Los Angeles. The city was lit up trying to discover a new Banksy piece. Rabid 'Banksy Hunters' would prowl the LA looking for new work. Once spotted, throngs of fans would flood to each piece and pose in front of it. Then there was always huge drama, and sometimes physical fights, when the pieces were taken down, cut out of walls, painted over, or even protected. It was a wild ride and the whole city really seemed to be caught up in the excitement. Come back to LA, Banksy!

#1 Mr. Brainwash's 'Art Show 2011'
M&F's top story of the year is Mr. Brainwash's introducing 'Art Show 2011' to Los Angeles. Art Show 2011 was the 'Woodstock of Art Shows', and Mr. Brainwash invited the community to come decorate 20,000+ square feet of his building. The show was fraught with many technical issues, but in the end, it managed to be a resounding success, and signifies the first time that the street art experience has been produced on a mass level. Thousands, if not tens of thousands of people participated as artists or spectators, and the show inspired everyone from children to grandmothers to start creating art.

  3. There is no reason Revok should be #10 and Teacher #7. Teacher should not even be on this list. What about Saber's skywriting? Not even on the list? SHM.....

  4. Skywriting is about a minute long. Cool idea, but even if Banksy wrote his name in the clouds, people would say "Wow.... Is he running out of ideas or something?" It wasn't top 10 material. If you happened to be inside when it happened, you didn't see a thing... And if you came out a minute too late, you just assumed it was some guy proposing to his gf. As for the Teacher haters, that man is a constant work in progress. Yeah his "Teach" tags aren't that impressive, but the message behind them is strong. When you see the word "Teach" somewhere, people don't say "Man, this artist is just trying to get his name out there." In fact, you probably don't even think it has to do with the artist's name at all (unless you know street art of course). I think LA needs him because he's the only one sh*tting on the California budget cuts. His actual art is sick, and the fact that he's so committed to one thing is very admirable. He definitely belongs in the top 10, and I wish he hadn't been arrested. We need more "Teacher"s out there that aren't afraid to do their thing regardless of what people write or say about them.

  5. ^ Agree! Maybe if Saber did the actual skywriting himself, that would have been impressive. Teacher has more of a variety of mediums than most street artists, and the commitment to bringing attention to the cuts in the education budget trumps all the others in current importance of message.

  7. MBW show bigger than the MOCA show!? NO WAY! MOCA garnered worldwide attention whereas the MBW show was only big in LA.

  8. I can understand why MBW was bigger than MOCA since it got people from LA to actually be part of it

I get the whole list. It makes sense. The only thing I would like to say is that the thing I love about M+F is the street coverage and I would have liked to see some street stuff on here

    what about the battles?

  17. MBW isn't an artist at all. . He uses others to create his work and just provides weird concepts to work off of. Banksy and Shep were ashamed of creating such a creature. Or did you not see "Exit through the gift shop"? And as to the teach Revok thing, well you gotta give respect where respects do! Revok is one of the founding fathers for how far you can take this amazing art form. And tho Teach is also killing the game bringing meaning back to L.A. graff art he is still new to the game and his graff work can use some work. By no means am I talking ish, please keep up the work teach. I've grown tired of living in a world full of lost souls that believe that the news isn't subjected to one point opinions. For that alone thank you and I can't wait to see what you hold instore for the future! But Revoks been at it way longer, has gone way further, and has been choosen to show his work amongst some of the worlds most prolific street artist (i.e. The MOCA exhibit). Also why MBW doesn't deserve to be higher the the MOCA! Lol I think someone was takin a bong rip on that one. So I would have to agree with the others that Revok should have definatley ranked at 7. Sorry teach... but then again, this ain't my website and if anyone disagrees I guess the smartest thing to do would be to start their own blog site and top ten...Lol
