Street Art -- Lost Values

This mural seems to capture everything that is wrong with street art and its lost values.

At face value, this is a mural painted by Kai Aspire. The piece is entitled 'Lost Values', and it is re-assigning Louis Vuitton's 'LV' to mean 'Lost Values'.

At face value, it is pretty weak. The art is lame. The message doesn't say anything. And why any street art piece would be talking about 'lost values' in the uber-rich fashion world is a stretch to say the least. Louis Vuitton and street art? What do they have in common? Nothing but lost values and poor artists.

But even though it wasn't intended, this piece works perfectly on a deeper level. Like we say in the opening sentence, this mural seems to capture everything that is wrong with street art and its lost values.

Kai Aspire is not just another street artist. Kai was born with a silver paint brush in his hand. Kai is the nephew of Mr. Brainwash, and Kai's father owns this wall where the mural was painted. In fact, years ago, this wall used to be organic street art. Meaning that art just used to pop up on this wall on its own. Then, 3 years ago, the Guetta family started curating this wall. The best part is that the art did keep changing with constantly rotating murals, but the worst part is that the move transitioned this wall from 'street art' to 'public art'.  Strike one.

Strike 2 is the focus of the content itself. Like we say, street art and fine fashion have nothing in common. And any street artist thinks that fashion empires like 'Louis Vuitton' demonstrate 'lost values', well, then the artist is the one with the lost values. Like here. Street art should pack a message worthy of the streets. Not just this piece, but street art in Los Angeles in general seems to be failing to spread a worthy message.

Strike 3 is to pretend to be something you're not. And since Warhol, their has been a movement in the art world that says a factory is okay--the factory concept is the idea that the artist does not have to paint every stroke, someone else can do the work and yet the art is still considered an original. Okay, fine. We understand the factory concept. But what Kai is doing seems beyond the scope of Warhol's factory. You see, Kai paints murals like this one, and the one pictured below. Actually, the one pictured below provides the perfect example of what Kai did and didn't do. Kai did paint his name on the right. You can see from the thick brush strokes and uncontrolled drips how Kai literally has no skill with the brush. And now, compare that to the image next to Kai's signature. It is a masterfully blended image of Kanye West dressed up in medieval clothing. The art skill is seriously stunning, but it is clear that the image was not painted by Kai. The image on the wall was actually wheat pasted, but it is an enlarged image of a painting that Kai attempted to sell at a previous art show, as his own work. What!? A lot of folks in the community were outraged at Kai's first show because he did not paint the art that he was selling. Forget the factory concept, when did it become anything other than fraud to pretend something you didn't make, is yours? Talk about lost values . . .

Okay. So this mural has technically already struck out. But there are still more egregious things wrong with it. Basically, and 'technically' this entire mural is not even 'art'. This is an advertisement. In fact, if you were to take this mural and shrink it down into postcard size, then this would be a flyer for Kai's show. It is not art because the information on the flyer tells the viewer where to buy what the artist is selling. The viewer is not allowed to interpret the image or message, when it is done this way the viewer is instructed where to 'shop'. Like we say, this is not art, this is a painted advertisement.  For an art show with paintings that the artist did not paint focusing on issues that are irrelevant to life and the streets.

Finally, the only time Kai does anything on the streets is right before he is about to have an art show. As M&F has said before, the streets are not a platform to a gallery. The streets are the real prize. And if you only put up a handful of street pieces in order to hype a gallery show, well, that is not really a street artist. Don't know exactly where to draw the line, but that is not a street artist at all. That's someone trying to use the streets for advertisements. Not street art, an insult to the streets.

Street art needs to dump some baggage, get back into touch with what its about, and remedy these 'lost values'.

Stay up, Los Angeles!

BanksyNY -- The Banality of an Art Auction -- ***UPDATE: Now Over $300,200!**

The auction for Banksy's art piece, 'The Banality of the Banality of Evil' is currently at $220,200, with 74 bids. This is after only one day of bidding, and still less than 24 hours into it.

Its actually kind of exciting to see these numbers jump. But the amounts are so ridiculous that it essentially like pretend money to most folks like you and me. But it is sure crazy watching those numbers climb!

Meanwhile, still waiting on Banksy's reveal for today. Usually, when Banksy has waited, it generally has meant that it is not a graffiti based piece, and also, something that Banksy wanted to last through the day without being noticed, before he claims it and the crowds go nuts. Stay tuned for Banksy's piece for October 30th!

***UPDATE -- The bidding has now jumped up to $300,200 with 83 bids***

BanksyNY - What If . . . .

Banksy's Canvas Stall Public Interaction at Central Park has left Banksy fans feeling all kinds of queasy.

The canvases that Banksy was selling were listed at $60/apiece, but in the art world they have been valued at $31,000/apiece.

This whole scenario has left a lot of people sick to their stomachs with a belly ache like a giant missed opportunity.  The fact that owning a Banksy piece is completely out of reach for most Banksy fans accompanied with the fact that the canvas originals offered for sale on the streets were presented in such an open manner and for such an attainable price that it has people questioning--what they would have done?

This might be the most poignant Banksy piece yet.  This installation was not about religious wrongs, or war, or animal abuse--it was about money.  Which begs the question, is money the true God in Western culture?

So, what if you had walked past Banksy's stall?  Would fans have recognized the originals?  Or walked past the art stall complaining about bootlegs and knockoffs?  Would you have bought a painting?  How many?  If so, would you keep it?  Furthermore, what does this say about prices in the art world if a canvas valued at $31,000 doesn't sell on the streets for $60?

Everybody has a 'What If'.  So, what if if it you had a chance to walk by Banksy's Original Canvas Stall. What would you have done?

BanksyNY Turns the Art World on Its Head

Bwahahahahaaa! LOVE today's piece from Banksy!

Banksy turns the art world upside down by setting up a sidewalk stall and selling 100% authentic original signed Banksy canvases for $60.

Every person in the world wants a Banksy and dreams of having one, right?  So guess how many sold? 8 canvases were sold, for a daily grand total of $420.  Two canvases were even haggled for at half price.

Incredible piece from Banksy.  Turning canvas art into performance art.

This demonstration shows how the art world is completely subjective.  Things in the art world only have value when someone says they have value.

Awesome stuff.  Please note, Banksy states that the art stall will not be there again today.

Banksy - The Musical (in Los Angeles!)

What can we say, LA loves Banksy.  The City of Angels is a bit jealous that New York City is getting all the action, so far.  This piece just popped up on La Brea as a call for Banksy to come back to LA.

Notice how the original Banksy pieces have been modified (like how the puking flowers now morph into the city skyline of LA).

Honestly, this is better than any of the New York Banksy tribute pieces that have been seen so far.

Dig it.  Come back to LA, Banksy.  LA is puking love for you!

Art Show Cap

Calling it like it is with a simple 'Cap Cap' going over an advertisement capping a poster that has Banksy's art show announcement for October . . . in Los Angeles.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - A Month-Long New York Artist Residency

Well, the official word is finally here:  Banksy's Better Out Than In will be a month long artist residency on the streets of New York City.

Banksy has updated his website, which now has more information for the show, along with a phone number that can be called for enhanced viewing pleasure.  The recording can also be listened to online.

It might be disheartening for LA since it looks like the art is not going to be here.  Still, October looks to be an exciting month with fresh new outdoor Banksy works planned!

This is the latest.  Click the link to get Banksy's phone number, and stay tuned to M&F for more!

October Arrives . . . New Banksy Artwork . . . In New York!?

Well, the plot surrounding Banksy's 'Better Out Than In' thickens . . .

Fragile is a photographer who often times will be the first one to post Banksy's new work.  Well, Fragile just posted this photo of a new stencil image with the location being listed as New York.

Fragile posted the pic on his Twitter however, unless you follow Fragile, the account is locked.  Officially, there is still no change on Banksy's website.

Still not confirmed that this is actually Banksy, although it seems it may be so.  Does this mean that Banksy's art show is going to be in New York?  Or maybe, if everything is outside, is the art show is going to be at many locations all over?

Let the speculation continue . . .

Banksy - Please Me, Quit Teasing Me

A photoshopped version of the image of the Banksy's graffiti writer puking flowers has been passed around the internet.

Nice trick, but its just another tease.   There is still no info as to where this piece actually is, or the announcement from Banksy as to what exactly 'Better Outside Than In' refers to.

But Banksy's website does bear the cryptic word 'October'.  Today is the last day of September.  New news is expected soon!

The Mainstream Media Does Fine Journalism

M&F often pokes fun of the mainstream media, because they are clueless and don't have the balls to report true investigative journalism.

And it is always funny when street art makes the mainstream, because it is such a watered down bullshit portrayal of the genre, that one begins to realize everything on the mainstream evening news is watered down bullshit.  Even the grandparents have turned the evening news off.  Does anyone still watch this bunk?

Well, NBC Los Angeles just did a 3 minute feature on where Banksy's teaser might be located in LA. No, there are no new answers, and its hardly worth watching.  But M&F does think it is quite funny how NBC inserted Melrose and Fairfax into the title without mentioning, interviewing, or crediting MELROSEandFAIRFAX:

http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Banksy-LA-Melrose-Fairfax-Street-Art-Return-Rumors-225261912.html

Keep up the fine journalism, mainstream news.~

Stay up, Los Angeles!

Oh Shit! Banksy's Art Show is in San Diego!

Well, its close to LA . . .

The San Diego Times are reportedly getting set to publish an article saying that Banksy's art show will be in San Diego.

Waiting for Banksy's Show Announcement is Like Reading the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue

Here is another one of those pasters advertising an upcoming November Art Show in LA.  After it got pasted, someone came and added an 'F' to read Fart Show, and then someone else came and placed the cut out of a German Shepard.

I bet a lot of people think their dogs could star in their own 'Fart Show'.~

But enough with the teasers.  Seeing all of these around the streets, and the Banksy ones, its like reading the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.  Enough with the teasers--lets see the goods!

Art Show, Fart Show - We Want More Details!

(That said, guess marketing like this is another reason Banksy is such a great artist.  The canvas is our expectations! Still waiting with fingers crossed . . . )

Call to Los Angeles - Anyone Know Where This Is?

During Banksy's last run through Los Angeles in 2011, all the foot soldiers and Banksy Hunters helped track down Banksy's new pieces almost immediately, and sometimes even before Banksy even announced the pieces on his website.

So, if this piece is in Los Angeles, where is it?

The lighting sure looks like LA.  It could be a sidewalk or an alleyway, but either way, it looks too clean for Hollywood or downtown.  If M&F had to guess, maybe the Westwood area?  (which is also where Banksy's first piece in 2011 went up, the awesome Crayon Soldier).

Anyone spot this on the streets?  Anyone . . . .

2 Different Art Shows - Banksy Art Show October, Other Art Show November

The internet is still abuzz with rumors that Banksy's yet-to-be-announced art show is going to be in LA.

To be clear, there still has no official word from Banksy's camp as to what is happening in October, or where.

Meanwhile, on the streets of LA, pasters have been showing up announcing Banksy's art show as fact. As M&F stated yesterday, these 'Banksy October 2013' pasters are not from Banksy, or his team. Rather, the style and font used on the Banksy posters is the same as the art show posters that have been showing up around LA for the past month, hyping up a November art show.  There are two different art shows.  Both different posters can be seen on the box above.

Once again, the Banksy pasters are not official, but LA is still hopeful for Banksy!

LA is Ready for Banksy's Art Show!

Yesterday, M&F covered how the home page of Banksy's website has been changed to show a new stencil piece and the vague title 'Better Outside Than In - October 2013'.

Today, there are new pasters on the streets of LA announcing an October Art show from Banksy.

Although it still has not been officially announced when, where, or exactly what the website is referring to, the internet is abuzz with speculation, and most folks are speculating that Banksy's show is coming to LA.

To be clear, these are not official announcements, or anything even from Banksy.  These posters are a sign that LA is ready for Banksy's art show!

Can't wait for more info, but LA is ready with fingers crossed and pasters pasted!

***Big thanks to Ann for sending in this picture!***
