When Vandalism Gets Vandalized - Snyder Toys with OmarNY

Omar NY has turned himself into the instant anti-hero for his defacement of Banksy's beautiful Band Aid Balloon.  In doing so, Omar has subjected himself to numerous humorous online jabs at his nut hugger fame.  And now, Snyder just created his own version of Omar's unhappy balloon.  Dig how the image makes Omar an online icon for a toy and captures the hater spirit perfectly!

To read about Snyder's thoughts about Banksy, and also how Snyder subtly points out that Snyder has been doing Urban Art Shows for a long while now, check it out HERE.

Gettin' Up's a Dirty Job and Snyder's the Man To Do It!

Go ahead.  Just sing it along to the tune of the Ratt anthem 'Lovin You's a Dirty Job'.

Snyder shows that it takes a little getting dirty to get up.  Dig it~

Snyder's Rocket Boy - Still Launching Off!

Snyder introduced his Rocket Boy years ago, and the character has since got up all over the world.

Here is Snyder's Rocket Boy blasting off on Melrose, and Snyder has this to say about his classic character:

A full scale Rocket Boy piece was first installed years ago in Oceanside along the highway 78. Rocket Boy launched up the side of a pillar and out from under a bridge where a collection of freehand graffiti tags remained. His surge out form the dark represented the state of street art at that specific time launching out from underground subversive art scene and into the mainstream. This dumpster RB piece represents the same idea.

Snyder - Mini Doodles Umbrella

Snyder revisits his Doodles Umbrella piece, this time with a mini version of Doodle right on Melrose.

This mini was not a sanctioned piece, and Snyder said the early morning cover of rabid sneaker heads provided the perfect cover for getting up.

Dig it.  Melrose life~

Snyder & Teacher - The Classroom as the Street

Here is a guest post from Snyder detailing an awesome morning with Teach on the streets of Melrose:

I arrived early at the Ethos Gallery Fame Yard. As I rolled into the parking lot I glanced up into the day's first rays of light and saw a figure dangling from a ladder easily 24ft. high above the ground. While most of the community was still slapping around their snooze alarm, this artist was hand painting the first base coat of his largest stencil piece to date.

It is not uncommon for a street artist to manage pieces alone. Minutes ago I was balancing on the top step of a paste dripped a-frame ladder in flip flops amongst the early commuter honks of Melrose. Street artists are comfortable doing this, as well as seeing this among their contemporaries, but the sight of Teacher, one of the most technically skilled artists in the game, blew me away.

I instantly offered help, but was politely waved off. With the giant billboard looming just overhead, the rejection seemed justified.

I took a seat and enjoyed a rare exhibition of a carefully honed technique. Though the morning wind was mild, I nervously watched Teacher climb the ladder with the gigantic stencil in hand, reach the top and tape it to the facade. I offered help, but was again met by a polite refusal.

Teacher carefully lined up the piece before climbing back down to the ground. We exchanged pleasantries, caught up on life, and before I knew it, he was back on the ladder.

The organized apparatus of ladders alone was a piece of art. Each ladder extended to a higher level eventually concluding with a not-so-easy hoist onto the high roof above Melrose. A sight only a few have witnessed and one which flip flops unfortunately prevented. Once atop, Teacher enjoyed the view, slapped some stickers and began spraying the top of the piece.

I was surprised how long it took him to spray the entire black layer, but soon related to the comfort of not having to rush through a piece. As he carefully worked his way down the top half and continued the lower half from the ladder, I meandered the yard with my box of trouble adding color to the recently buffed walls, later to find that in between climbing ladders and swapping gigantic stencils, Teacher managed to snap some photos of me in the midst of some of my own shenanigans.

I returned while Teacher was still atop the ladder and was greeted by a neighbor of the yard. A lady in her 50s with a strong accent greeted me as I scouted areas around an empty dumpster. She expressed her admiration for Teacher and his evolving piece. She eagerly offered her driveway to Teacher requesting a portrait of Jacqueline Kennedy. Teacher liked the idea, but I could tell he was focused on one piece at a time.

The last few streaks were sprayed along with some finishing drips. Teacher descended from the ladder, joined me at the back of the parking lot and together we admired his largest finished stencil piece to date.

On this early morning I removed all background knowledge of this LA artist. I looked past his views on the current state of public education and for the moment, I ignored the his journey to bring light to the unfavorable conditions of public educators. I stripped down this educational experience and took it for face value. The classroom was the street. The chalkboard was a 30 foot urban wall and the subject was how to start and finish a fucking gigantic stencil all by yourself!

-Snyder

Dig it!  Snyder is a master of self stencils himself, so to take a student's approach and still enjoy a learning experience like this shows how it is about learning and love of art, not ego.  Great artists and great story!

Teacher's Impressive Legal Wall (pt. 2)

A second round of Teacher's impressive legal wall on Melrose, complete with finished pics.

Dig the work, and the concept.

Check out more pics, with a cameo-appearance from Snyder who also helped execute this impressive installation.

Snyder - Sometimes the Streets Change Around the Art

Like M&F has said before, many times, generally, art on the streets doesn't last for long, but sometimes, the streets change around the art.

Here is another great example where Synder's Dunce piece has been riding on Melrose for so long that vines are starting to grow up along Dunce's backside.

Even though this was put up as an unsanctioned illegal street piece, the owners seem to love it and have buffed tags and other art that has gone up around it, choosing to protect and keep the Doodle in place!

Dig it~

Faded 8 Years Later

This sticker from Snyder is faded, but still riding 8 years after hitting the streets.

Dig it~

This is the original logo for the Carlsbad Crawl.

Which Drunk Witch

After riding for years on end, the previously posted Witch Creek Winery gets a newly detailed Witch from Snyder.

This is not a commission piece, but an illicit street piece that has been embraced by the company where it was placed, and the community.

Livin in LA - Vacation in Carlsbad

Carlsbad has arguably become M&F's favorite local vacation spot near Los Angeles.

Perhaps it is the blend of the chill beach town community vibes mixed with good friends like Snyder, but Carlsbad is the ultimate vacation spot nearby Los Angeles.  (M&F enjoys Carlsbad so much we have fantasies about moving there!).  But for now, Carlsbad is just a rad vacation destination~

Pictured above, Snyder has an ongoing battle with some neighborhood crows, and the above shot is a mock shot of Snyder stomping a crow.  Of course, Snyder would never actually hurt a crow and found it in this flattened condition, but Snyder does love to huck a water balloon or a few at a noisy murder of crows.

Doodle's Imagination Video

Wonder what the video might look like for Snyder's recent install?  Well, you don't have to imagine . . .

Here is a brand new video capturing Snyder's new Doodle's Imagination mural.

If you dig the art, you can pick up a print HERE.

Snyder - Get Up Too Much?

Snyder is a prolific artist who shares his artwork all over the streets of his hometown of Carlsbad. M&F has visited Carlsbad, and Snyder's omnipresent art is everywhere, from stickers to murals around town.

Most street artists would consider this level of getting up a success, and Snyder does too, however, because Snyder gets up so much, that for the moment, it seems to have worked against him.

Snyder reports that 'The New Village Arts Theatre and the San Diego Charitable Foundation just worked together on securing a large grant that ultimately financed artists to paint murals in the Carlsbad Village. I was asked to submit a design. I was chosen as a finalist, but later removed from the project. Apparently someone on the committee thought I already have enough art in the Village and my space was given to another.

I figured there was only one way to react... and that was with more art! Here is the first of a series of new murals titled 'Doodle's Imagination'. This one, like the others to follow, is directly in the heart of the village... and financed and organized completely by Snyder Art.'

Dig it.  You can't keep a good street artist down, and love Snyder's response to the nay-sayers by putting a brand new mural smack in the center of town.

On another level, also love the deeper symbolism behind Snyder's mural.  The way that this painting shows Snyder's signature character Doodle pulling back the two-tone canvas to reveal a lustrous sky scape behind, it demonstrates how artists make life more colorful.

If you also love the art, you grab a sweet piece of art yourself and help out a hustling artist by picking up one of Snyder's limited edition prints HERE.

Stay up and keep Doodlin'!~

Snyder - Omnipresent Art

Snyder coined the term 'omnipresent art' to describe his method of painting mundane objects to highlight the idea that art is around us at all times.

Indeed, when you visit Carlsbad, Snyder's art is everywhere.

Snyder has the biggest murals, the savvy-est street art spots, and his paintings are even riding inside many of the buildings in the Carlsbad Village.

Here is some of Snyder's omnipresent art that is still riding around the outside of his former studio right in downtown Carlsbad.  The custom painted brick is dated 2009, and it is also cool to see the progression of Snyder's technique.  Also notice the stencil Snyder has stealthily riding on the electric box up high.

Dig Snyder's omnipresent art~

Snyder is Omnipresent with his Art

While visiting Snyder in Carlsbad, he didn't tell us about this spot.  He didn't have to.  His art is just everywhere.

Here are a couple beach front garbage bins featuring Snyder's signature drip stencil technique, and a custom plant pot.  Looks like the art is doing better than the plant~

Literally, eveywhere a person walks in Carlsbad they will have the pleasure of encountering Snyder's omnipresent art.  It just makes the bland stuff more interesting.
