El Mac Retna Mini Mural

The dopeness of this mini mural on La Brea is not diminished by its small size (only 6 feet tall or so). Sick stuff~

Its almost like a premonition of the massive, incredible mural by El Mac and Retna at Fice in Salt Lake City.

El Mac and Retna Mural at Fice

This is the one that everyone is talking about.

Every time street art came up, people in Salt Lake would ask if we had seen the El Mac/Retna mural on 2nd South. Everyone was talking about the mural - even my mom!

(This piece went a long way in finally convincing her that graffiti artists and tags lead to beautiful art, not just vandalism.)

Not only is this a beautiful piece of art, but it really stands out in the uber-conservative Mormon populated town, blocks away from LDS Headquarters at Temple Square.

The pics don't do El Mac's intricate lines and depth justice.

Great piece. Dig it~

Berg Propaganda - Salt Lake City Street Art Comes to Los Angeles

Life is funny, full of twists and turns.

MELROSEandFAIRFAX arrived back in Los Angeles yesterday after taking a vacation in Salt Lake City. When we hit the streets today to take some pics, we thought we were still back in Utah. Literally, the first piece of art we saw on Melrose is from Salt Lake street artist Berg.

Berg is almost single-handily holding it down for wheat pastes in Salt Lake. His art was at all the hot art spots, as well as up on prime spots on the street.

It was not surprising to see wheat pastes in Salt Lake, but it was surprising to see an artist at this level. Berg's work is cutting edge, and the top notch stencils would stand out in the biggest art cities- just as it jumped out in LA.

MELROSEandFAIRFAX was curious to find out more about Berg Propaganda, and we located a great interview with the artist where he discusses his incredibly entitled beginning to street art (meeting KAWS himself!) and discusses "the notion that art can be weaponized in an attempt to alter public opinion". You can peep the interview

Graffiti & Mormons - Street Art in Salt Lake City

MelroseandFairfax spent the last week in beautiful Salt Lake City, Utah.

We had a great time exploring the streets and documenting the street art there.

Salt Lake has a vibrant street art scene, with loads of graffiti, wheat pastes, a handful of stickers, and the coolest 'non-traditional' street art that we've seen.

The city brings its own flavor to street art. Much of it is packaged with religious overtones. We hit many of the city's hot spots and captured some really cool stuff.

MelroseandFairfax is happy to have a solid folder of 137 pics of street art in Salt Lake. We look forward to blasting Salt Lake's street art alongside LA, and will be mixing it up. (side note: Los Angeles has a strong influence on the art world everywhere-and one of the coolest pieces of art that everyone in Salt Lake was talking about was the mural downtown at Fice by LA-based artists Retna and El Mac~)
