Best of LA 2010
MELROSEandFAIRFAX is proud to announce the first annual 'Best of Los Angeles Street Art-2010'.
It has been an awesome year and we have witnessed some incredible art on the streets. Now its time to pick your favorites~
We have broken it down into 5 categories Top Street Artist, Top Sticker Artist, Top Graffiti Artist, Top Crew and Crowd Favorite. The first four are limited to one vote per person, and the last is a straight popularity contest-vote as many times as you want.
We puzzled long and hard over how to select the nominees. After a lot of thoughtful consideration, decided that the fairest way would be to go by the amount of coverage--the artists with the most tags on MELROSEandFAIRFAX were chosen. And even then, since many artists cover many different categories (i.e. graffiti AND stickers), there was still great difficulty deciding who goes where.
After long periods hammering it out, we nailed down these nominees. Check it out~

All the artists nominated deserve mad props. These are the top artists of the year, as far as we are concerned. Clearly, we couldn't nominate everyone. There are many, many deserving artists. Apologies to all those we've covered but couldn't nomiate. In our book, if you are making art and getting up, you are already artist of the year~
-Voting will be on the right side of the site. Voting ends December 27th. Prizes will be announced soon.
***Lol, we got slammed right after this post, and the polls crashed due to high traffic. We will try to get it straightened out right away. Thanks***
***Update: we got things back up and running! Vote away~***

Absolutely love the way all the letters and names are just thrown on this wall. Really great aesthetically and for comparing styles.
Pieces from Sever, Cease, Bose, Aroe, Gabor, MSK, Risk, Path, Hense, Aloy, Fate, Bus, Look, Smog, Gkae, Cest, The Seventh Letter and a few more we can't make out.

Love the way street art comes together.

Riding Bareback
Discovered this oil painting mounted in a doorway when Shasta chased a cat down the driveway
It features a naked lady mounting a horse about to ride bareback.
And while this might not be traditional 'street art', it is worth noting how art enhances even the simplest things.

Army of One - Only the Dead/We Never Die
jc2 gets up Grenade Boy on this billboard pole on Melrose.
The writing says "Only the dead have seen the end to war". Powerfully placed next to a 'We Never Die' wheat paste from Cyrcle.
The streets are at war, and street artists never die~

This sign is slammed with slaps and graff.

California Republic
We love all things California.
This piece of California Republic street art is impressive. It looks to be composed of newspaper prints glued together, then hand painted. Ablsolutely massive.
Unknown artist.
We dig it~

Love these 3-d brains affixed to the artist wall in downtown Los Angeles.

Cast a Shadow
Me and Shasta cast long shadows on this dumpster full of graffiti.
Most of the tags are so old that the paint has chipped off, not necessarily got buffed (the sticker from Jeph has a 92 on it--not sure if that's the year or a crew?
The tags and stickers we can make out are from REM, LCF, Wham, Jeph, Blue
