Graffiti Started a Revolution

Street art and graffiti hold up a mirror to society, and often give back a biting social commentary.

And the fact that graffiti is an outlaw activity just inflames whatever issue is at hand. We have seen it happen many times on the local level. But the power of graffiti has reached a new height, and has triggered a revolution in Syria.

Don't take our word for it. Its Time Magazine who is reporting this.

Time Magazine just published an article entitled Syria's Revolt: How Graffiti Stirred An Uprising.

And while we don't fully understand the issues at hand enough to weigh in on the political nature of what is happening in Syria, we are impressed with how graffiti was the voice that started the revolution. Graffiti is about empowerment, and making a statement whether it is invited or not. Sometimes that is a good thing, sometimes its not, but this is one of the most dramatic examples of the power that graffiti has to make a statement, and truly, start a revolution~
